Solengo 2006 - Argiano

Recently, I opened a bottle of Argiano Solengo 2006 from the cellar of Villa Licata — an elegant and powerful Super Tuscan that, after nearly two decades of bottle aging, expresses itself beautifully. This wine, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and Petit Verdot, reflects the warm character of the 2006 vintage, with deep ripeness and a silky structure.

In the glass, it shows an intense ruby color. The nose opens with notes of black cherry, plum compote, licorice, and tobacco, followed by warm spices and a hint of cocoa. On the palate, it is full, rich, and round, with ripe tannins, soft acidity, and a long, spicy finish.

The Solengo 2006 shines beautifully with rich Tuscan meat dishes such as grilled cinta senese, pappardelle with lamb ragù, or a classic bistecca alla fiorentina. It also pairs perfectly with aged cheeses featuring salt crystals, like an old Pecorino. This wine is currently at an ideal drinking window — fully open, round, and layered — but, if well stored, can still be enjoyed with pleasure until around 2030. Decanting is recommended.

A presto, Salute!
