Saffredi 2013 - Le Pupille

Last week, I opened a bottle of the 2013 Villa di Saffredi from Fattoria Le Pupille, drawn from the cellar — a wine that beautifully captures the essence of Tuscany’s Maremma region. This vintage, the first crafted under the direction of renowned oenologist Luca D’Attoma, is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 10% Petit Verdot. The increased presence of Petit Verdot adds precision and poise, enhancing the wine’s overall balance and finesse.

When poured, the Saffredi 2013 reveals an opaque ruby-red color. The bouquet offers aromas of blackcurrant, blueberry compote, dark chocolate, and underlying notes of forest undergrowth. On the palate, the wine is silky-smooth, with a powerful structure, subtle sweetness, and a distinctive chalky minerality. The alcohol and creaminess are precisely balanced with the wine’s extract, resulting in impressive length and a noble yet approachable style.

This wine has excellent aging potential and can continue to evolve until 2035. The Saffredi 2013 truly shines when paired with grilled red meats, game dishes, or aged cheeses, where the rich flavors and robust structure of the wine beautifully complement the deep, earthy notes of these dishes.
