Messorio 1998 – Le Macchiole

Recently, I opened a bottle of Messorio 1998 from Le Macchiole, a wine that perfectly captures the essence of Bolgheri in Tuscany. This 100% Merlot has aged beautifully for over two decades and is now at its peak. When poured, its intense, rich color immediately stands out. The bouquet reveals a wide range of aromas, including overripe blueberries, blackberries, tar, licorice, and a hint of smoke. On the palate, the wine offers a powerful, rich, and almost unrestrained experience, with a remarkable finish.

Le Macchiole, founded in 1983 by Eugenio Campolmi and Cinzia Merli, is located in the heart of Bolgheri, Tuscany. The winery is known for pioneering the production of single-varietal wines, a bold and unusual choice at the time. After Eugenio’s passing in 2002, Cinzia took over and continued to carry out the winery's vision. Since 2002, Le Macchiole has adopted organic practices in its vineyards and is experimenting with biodynamic methods, emphasizing its commitment to sustainability and quality.

The Messorio 1998 is the perfect match for traditional Tuscan dishes. Think of Bistecca alla Fiorentina, a grilled T-bone steak from the Chianina breed, or Pappardelle al Cinghiale, wide pasta served with a rich wild boar ragù. The deep flavors and firm structure of the Messorio 1998 pair wonderfully with the savory, earthy notes of these dishes, creating an unforgettable culinary experience.
