In the glass, the wine shows a pale ruby colour, almost Burgundian in appearance. The nose is remarkable: ethereal and mineral, with aromas of wild strawberry, pomegranate, dried flowers, wet lava stone, and a hint of orange peel. On the palate, it is unpolished yet intense – pure, energetic and linear, with fine acidity, subtle tannins, and a long, salty finish that fully reflects its volcanic origin.
Magma 2017 calls for refined, earthy dishes that support its subtle power. Think roasted pigeon with mushrooms, risotto with smoked eggplant and thyme, or even a simple but flavourful caponata. It also pairs beautifully with lightly aged cheeses. The wine is currently expressive and vibrant, but will continue to develop in complexity until at least 2030. Serve slightly chilled and decant gently to preserve its delicate balance.
