La Rocca 2004 - Pieropan

Tonight I opened a bottle of La Rocca 2004 from Pieropan, a white wine that always moves me with its depth and timeless elegance.
Pieropan is without question the benchmark of Soave — a family defined by an unshakeable dedication to their land and to the garganega grape.

Leonildo Pieropan was a true pioneer, one of the first to show that Soave could be so much more than a light, refreshing white. With the right vineyard and patience, it reveals depth, structure, and an almost meditative beauty.

The La Rocca vineyard, nestled just below the castle of Soave, consistently yields wines of greater tension and concentration. The 2004 shows this beautifully: deep golden color, aromas of ripe peach, honey, almond blossom, and a hint of vanilla. With air, it unfolds a Burgundian complexity — creamy, lightly smoky, yet always carried by vivid acidity.

On the palate, it’s round, velvety, and perfectly poised: ripe fruit balanced by a mineral, almost saline freshness.

It pairs beautifully with seafood risotto, grilled langoustines, or roast chicken with lemon and rosemary — and shines alongside aged cheeses like Monte Veronese or Parmigiano.

After more than twenty years, this La Rocca 2004 remains remarkably vibrant. The oak has fully integrated, the fruit still clear and bright, the finish long and pure.

A quiet, noble beauty that once again proves the astonishing aging potential of great Soave.
