La Poja 2012 – Allegrini

I recently opened a bottle of La Poja 2012 from Allegrini, straight from the cellar of Villa Licata. This is a bold and expressive 100% Corvina, sourced from the iconic La Grola vineyard in the heart of Valpolicella Classica. The 2012 vintage was known for its warm growing season, and you can taste it: the wine is now beautifully ripe, with a velvety texture and deep, concentrated aromas.

In the glass, it shows an intense ruby-red color. The nose opens with notes of black cherry, plum compote, liquorice and tobacco, followed by warm spices and a hint of cocoa. On the palate, it’s full, rich and rounded, with ripe tannins, gentle acidity, and a long, spicy finish.

La Poja 2012 pairs wonderfully with hearty dishes like brasato al Valpolicella, rosemary-roasted leg of lamb, or pappardelle al cinghiale. It also shines alongside aged cheeses such as Monte Veronese or Pecorino Vecchio. The wine is clearly at its peak now; while it still has aging potential, this is an ideal time to enjoy it. Decanting is recommended.

Status: drinking beautifully now, at its peak. Cellaring potential until at least 2030.

A presto, Salute!
