The 2001 Riserva, made from 100% Sangiovese, comes from an exceptionally harmonious vintage and is now showing itself at a beautiful stage of maturity. In the glass, it displays a deep garnet-red colour with warm highlights. The nose is rich and complex: ripe cherries, dried plums and roses, followed by notes of tobacco, leather, liquorice and a hint of balsamic. Everything is broad and harmonious, without ever becoming heavy.
On the palate, the wine is full and structured, yet strikingly refined. The tannins are fully integrated, the acidity keeps the wine lively, and the finish is long, warm and layered. This is a Brunello with authority but also with serenity, a wine that doesn’t need to prove its greatness.
As for food pairings, I think of classic Tuscan dishes: game, slow-braised beef or lamb, or rich pasta dishes with meat ragù. Its depth also pairs beautifully with aged cheeses.
After nearly twenty-five years, this Riserva is fully at its peak. It can still go on for a bit, but this is the moment where everything comes together: power, elegance and complexity. A great, classical Brunello that perfectly shows why 2001 is considered one of Montalcino’s finest vintages.
