Brunello di Montalcino 2016 – Gianni Brunelli (Montalcino, Toscana)

Out of curiosity and drawn by the high ratings, I decided to taste the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino from Gianni Brunelli. This wine has an average score of 93.8 points based on 16 community reviews.

When poured, the wine presents a deep ruby red color. The bouquet is enticing, with aromas of rose petals, camphor, freshly turned earth, and perfumed berries. On the palate, the wine offers a lively and juicy structure with notes of red cherries, pomegranate, and star anise, supported by tight, refined tannins and a crisp acidity that provides a radiant and balanced finish.

The Gianni Brunelli winery has a rich history. In 1987, Gianni Brunelli returned to Montalcino and bought back the old family property "Le Chiuse di Sotto," a vineyard that once belonged to his father. Located in the northeastern part of Montalcino, this vineyard includes a small plot with vines that were planted by his father in 1947, which adds depth and authenticity to the wines.

The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino pairs wonderfully with typical Tuscan dishes such as bistecca alla Fiorentina, a grilled T-bone steak from the Chianina breed, or pappardelle al cinghiale, broad ribbon pasta with a rich wild boar sauce. These dishes, with their robust flavors and hearty textures, harmonize beautifully with the wine's complex structure and refined tannins, creating a culinary experience that fully expresses the elegance and depth of this Brunello.
