Barolo Unoperuno 2012 - Elio Altare

Today I felt like opening a bottle of Barolo Unoperuno 2012 from Elio Altare, a wine that always feels special because it comes across as so personal. Elio Altare was one of the great innovators of Barolo: uncompromising, rebellious, and yet deeply rooted in La Morra.

The 2012, made from 100% Nebbiolo, is showing itself today as remarkably open and seductive. In the glass, it displays a bright ruby-red colour with slight evolution. The nose is intense yet refined: red cherries, rose petals and wild herbs, followed by notes of tar, spice and a subtle balsamic touch. As is often the case with Altare, there is a certain sensuality in the wine without losing its precision.

On the palate it is silky and harmonious, with fully integrated ripe tannins. The warmer vintage brings charm and approachability, while the fresh acidity maintains enough tension. The fruit remains bright and juicy, leading to a long, elegant finish where herbal and mineral notes linger beautifully.

In terms of food pairing, I immediately think of the classic cuisine of Piedmont: tajarin with truffle, brasato, or dishes with mushrooms and slow-cooked meats. Even with simply roasted meat, its finesse shines beautifully.

The 2012 is currently at a beautiful drinking window: open, refined and fully balanced. It still has some ageing potential, but this is exactly the stage where I prefer Barolo from Altare, when power gives way to elegance and pure drinking pleasure.
