Barolo Rocche dell’Annunziata 1996 - Paolo Scavino

From the cellar, I brought up a bottle of Barolo Rocche dell’Annunziata 1996 by Paolo Scavino, a wine that immediately commands respect due to its origin and age. Paolo Scavino is one of the absolute references for Barolo: a family-owned estate that has, for decades, combined tradition and precision with a particularly keen eye for crus and terroir expression. Rocche dell’Annunziata, in La Morra, is one of those vineyards that almost effortlessly delivers finesse and depth.

The 1996 vintage, a classic and structured year, shows itself today fully evolved yet remarkably vital. In the glass, it displays a clear brick-red color with orange hues. The nose is complex and layered: dried cherries, rose petals, truffle, and tar, complemented by notes of leather, tobacco, and a hint of balsamic. Everything is beautifully integrated, without heaviness.

On the palate, the wine is slender and precise, with a still-clear backbone. The acidity keeps it fresh, the tannins have become refined and powdery, and the finish is long and elegant. This is Barolo in its most classical, contemplative form—not a powerhouse anymore, but a wine of nuance and depth.

In terms of food pairings, I think of the cuisine of the Langhe: tajarin with truffle, veal or beef stews, or simply prepared mushroom dishes—foods that leave room for the wine’s subtlety.

After nearly thirty years, this Rocche dell’Annunziata 1996 is clearly at its peak. No more aging is needed—this is a bottle to be enjoyed now, with attention, as a quiet homage to a great terroir and the craftsmanship of Paolo Scavino.
