Barolo Bussia Colonnello – Aldo Conterno (Monforte d’Alba, Piemonte)

Last week, I took out the Barolo Colonnello 2006 from Poderi Aldo Conterno from my wine cellar, a wine that embodies the essence of the prestigious Bussia vineyard in Monforte d'Alba, Piemonte. This Barolo, made from the Nebbiolo grape, presents itself with a rich, clear ruby red color. The bouquet opens with seductive aromas of tar and roses, complemented by notes of ripe blackberries, sweet vanilla, and polished black stone. On the palate, the wine offers a juicy structure with ripe tannins and a lingering finish, showcasing its opulent and enduring character.

The Colonnello vineyard is located at an elevation of about 360 meters and has an amphitheater-like position facing southwest. The soil consists of Sant'Agata marl with a higher sand content, which contributes to the elegant and aromatic qualities of the wines. The soil also contains a high amount of magnesium and manganese, elements that further enhance the complexity and finesse of the wine. The vines are, on average, 40 to 45 years old and are carefully maintained to ensure the highest quality. This specific terroir results in wines with firm tannins, fresh fruit aromas, and remarkable elegance.

The Barolo Colonnello 2006 pairs wonderfully with rich dishes such as braised game, truffle risotto, or aged cheeses. The wine’s complex flavors and robust structure harmonize beautifully with the deep, earthy notes of these dishes, creating a culinary experience that fully showcases the elegance and depth of this Barolo.
