Löwengang Inedtio II - Alois Lageder

Today I pulled from the cellar a bottle of Löwengang Inedito II from Alois Lageder — a wine that instantly reminds you how far truly visionary winemaking can go.

Alois Lageder has long been one of Alto Adige’s most forward-thinking producers: biodynamic, inquisitive, always searching for purity and balance. The “Inedito” line is his creative playground — wines that don’t fit into any classic framework, born from experimentation and bold ideas.

Inedito II may well be the finest example of that philosophy.
For this cuvée, Lageder selected nine different vintages, from 2013 to 2021. The oldest, 2013, spent nine full years in barrel before becoming part of the final blend. By combining — and recombining — the characteristics of each year, Lageder created a wine that had never existed in this form before: new, original, truly unique. In Italy, they would call it inedito.

In the glass, it shows a bright golden-yellow color. The nose is understated yet deep: ripe pear, citrus, yellow apple, chamomile and a subtle almond note, followed by the distinctive rocky minerality that defines Löwengang. Thanks to the multi-vintage blend, hints of honey, white flowers and a gentle spiciness also emerge — no single aroma dominates; everything forms a serene whole.

On the palate, it combines surprising roundness with great tension. There is depth and complexity, but always carried by a certain lightness. The saline undercurrent, the vibrant acidity and the elegant texture make this a wine that whispers rather than shouts. You can taste the patience of nine harvests — and the precision of the final assemblage.

For food pairings, my mind goes straight to the alpine cuisine of Alto Adige: herb-crusted trout, mountain herb risotto, delicate poultry dishes, grilled vegetables or soft cheeses. Subtle dishes suit this style best.
